Hanks High School students delivered outstanding performances at the 2026 UIL State Mariachi Festival championships. Hanks High School’s Mariachi Los Trovadores received the festival’s best ratings—a Division I Superior—from all three judges.
Hanks High School’s Mariachi Los Trovadores also received a Division 1 Superior rating, under the direction of Karla Urias; students received a group award and individual gold medals for every member.
Among all El Paso-area mariachi ensembles that competed at the state level, Ysleta ISD students secured two of the coveted Outstanding Individual Performer awards at the competition, now in its seventh year as an official UIL contest.

Hanks HS senior awarded prestigious $15K scholarship for music.
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A Hanks High School senior was surprised on Friday, Jan. 23, with the announcement of receiving the prestigious 2026-2027 Bill Cormack Scholarship, beating nearly 300 applicants statewide.
Jason Castillo was selected from among 290 applicants for the scholarship, the highest honor awarded by the Texas Music Educators Association, according to the Ysleta Independent School District.
Castillo has performed in both band and choir over the past four years and in the mariachi program for two years. He has earned a Vocal Solo medal at All-State Mariachi. He has been honored among El Paso’s top student performers for three years, when selected for the UIL All-State Mixed Choir, the highest distinction a Texas music student can achieve, according to YISD.
The $15,000 scholarship offers $3,000 per year, for up to five years, to the awardee, who must major in a music degree program leading to Texas teacher certification with music as the primary teaching field.

Ysleta ISD is excited to share that we have launched a new program districtwide that makes it easier for parents to report school absences and receive notifications about attendance. This program is called Ysleta Connects.
Ysleta Connects has been extended to every campus to strengthen how we connect with families when a student is absent, and explore new ways for technology to support faithful attendance. You will be able to conveniently send and receive confidential text messages from your child’s school about their absences/attendance.
How Ysleta Connects works:
If your child is marked absent, you will receive a text message.
The text will offer you the option to RESPOND or CONFIRM the absence, and you may also choose to engage in communication about your child’s absence.
And that’s it!
Parents will also be able to use Ysleta Connects to access critical attendance data for their child or notify the school in advance of their child’s absence(s). It’s important to know that Ysleta Connects text messages are strictly for absences/attendance – as a parent, you will continue to receive regular emergency notifications from the district via text, email, and automated phone calls as those situations arise.
